The main objective of the IDC is prepare you for teaching in the real world - not just to pass the IE!
The IDC shows you how to become a good instructor & how to use all the available PADI educational materials to efficiently and effectively teach your students in the future.
During the IDC, you'll learn to use and adapt the PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. Comprehensive training, supported by a wide variety of PADI educational materials, earns PADI Instructors respect from both students and peers.
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Course to the PADI Divemaster Course. You'll practice teaching on your fellow IDC candidates and our staff, allowing you to see how others teach, what works for them, and tips that will make you a better instructor when you finish the course.
When you teach you want to have fun, and your students do as well - thats why we provide a relaxed and professional atmosphere to learn in. PADI Instructors do things others can only daydream about.
The PADI Instructor Course consists of four parts:
- IDC Preperation - 3 days
- Assistant Instructor (AI) course - 4 days
- Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program - 6 days
- Instructor Exam (IE) - 2.5 days
Together, the AI course and OWSI program make up the IDC.
IDC Preperation - 3 days
To help you prepare for the IDC, we have added 3 preparation days, free of charge. These are designed to improve your performance in the IDC & IE, and allow us to see which areas of preparation you need to work on the most.
The 3 preparation days are used to:
- Check your required administration (please bring all diving & EFR certifications, a current medical, credit card and logbook)
- Check and refine your diving skills (demonstration quality required in your IE)
- Improve your rescue assessment (demonstration quality required in your IE)
- Practice your swimming and in-water skills
- Assess your theoretical knowledge and identify areas that need improving
- Sit practice exams from previous IE's
- Work on your presentation skills - giving you a real advantage in the IE
- Work on your CPR and First Aid skills
If you are able to prepare in 2 days, then you can take the optional Equipment Specialist Course. This course is available at a small surcharge.
Before you start the Instructor Development Course, Assistant Instructor Course or OWSI program, you must complete all 16 IDC Knowledge Reviews from the IDC Candidate Workbook. Our staff instructors will guide you through your reading assignments and help you understand PADI standards, educational philosophy, training suggestions and other background information.
You'll also complete practice PADI Divemaster exams including Physics, Physiology, Skills & Environment, Equipment and RDP. Dive Theory is the most common improvement area for IDC candidates. You'll receive feedback on any missed question you may have.
Assistant Instructor (AI) Course - 4 days
The first part of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the PADI The Assistant Instructor (AI) course provides additional experience as a PADI Professional and teaches you the PADI System of Diver Education.
What's involved?
- Self-study - Knowledge reviews, quizzes, lectures and presentations
- Confined water - Skills review and assessment, workshops and presentations
- Open Water - Workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
PADI Assistant Instructors can:
- Teach knowledge development (classroom) presentations (under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor)
- Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills (under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor)
- Teach the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
- Teach the Project AWARE Coral Conservation Specialty course
- Conduct PADI Discover Scuba Diving courses
- Teach the EFR Course after successfully completing the Emergency First Response Instructor Course
Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program - 6 days
The Open Water Scuba Instructor program portion of the PADI IDC further hones your leadership and teaching skills to prepare you for life as a PADI Instructor. The IDC course provides a professional learning experience in which you'll learn how to teach diving using the PADI System of Diver Education. You'll learn how to teach in the classroom, pool and open water environments, using PADI's teaching and support materials.
